I always found it odd that the British airmen couldn't understand what Rene and Colonel Von Strohm were saying, yet Rene and the Colonel could understand one another perfectly. I guess that's how the writers wanted it.

Although this isn't related to the topic, I thought I'd mention it. I just saw an episode of Allo Allo that David Griffin (Emmit on Keeping Up Appearances) appeared in. I thought that was pretty cool.

I always assumed it was because the Germans were speaking (understandable, if not flawless) French, in order to communicate with and dominate the French populace.

But the British airmen never learned French, and Officer Crabtree just sucks at it. Very Happy

But you're right, I don't recall them ever explicitly saying this. I'm starting to rewatch the whole series, so I'll look for more subtle clues this time around.

The Germans kept their accent when talking to Rene and the other cast members, yet they could still understand them. I guess they figured having the British airmen not understand them made the show funnier.

I loved when Crabtree tried to speak French. Sometimes Rene would repeat the mispronounced words back to him, which made it even better.
